An historic Perth family business has folded as “completely unaffordable” rates bite and customer tastes have changed.
Recent changes in the way that Business Rates are calculated are being challenged in many cases around the country as increases associated with increasing property prices are being passed on to independent, family owned retailers.
We are saddened by the demise of a business that started to trade back in 1900. Hopefully this is not going to be replicated in High Streets across the UK as it is the independent retailers that add to the charm and help to differentiate the High Street from the national retail brands, coffee shops and estate agents!
One of Perth’s oldest family run businesses is to close its doors at the end of the year after being priced out of the city. Changing tastes and the burden of business rates have been blamed for the demise of Wm Watson & Sons, a fixture on the city’s High Street since 1900.
