Family firms however are often in a better space, with a culture and values that engender performance, and as they progress through the generations and professionalise structures, they also create trust, respect and loyalty.  This is clearly demonstrated by the number of family businesses that employ many members of the same families within their businesses, and in many cases, generation after generation too.

Recruiting, retaining and motivating staff is often quoted as a key concern of businesses, family firms too, but with an open and honest environment, clear roles and responsibilities and reward for good performance, set in a mix of professionalism, sound values, trust and respect, family firms often, appear at least, to have more motivated staff too, alleviating the need to undertake 'weird methods of motivation' in the first place!
